According to new tori wey UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) release, about 52,000 Nigerians waka go UK for the year wey end December 2024, even though say net migration into di country reduce reach almost 50%.
Nigerians dey among di top non-EU+ people wey enter UK last year, and most of dem come because of work or school. 27,000 Nigerians enter UK with work visa, 22,000 come to study, and 3,000 enter under other immigration reasons. Di numbers show say Nigeria join countries like India, Pakistan and China as di countries wey send plenty people come UK.
According to wetin ONS report talk:
“For di year wey end December 2024, Indian na di highest non-EU+ nationality wey migrate enter UK. Di data also show say for Indians, Pakistanis and Nigerians, di reason why dem dey come mostly na work and school, and di numbers dey almost di same.”
“For Chinese people, na mostly to study dem dey come (53,000 for school, 5,000 for work). Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese and Nigerians dey always dey among top five non-EU+ people wey dey migrate long-term enter UK.”
As for age and gender matter, dem talk say 52% of di non-EU+ immigrants for 2024 na men, while 48% na women.
83% of dem na people wey dey between 16 and 64 years old (working age), 16% be children under 16, and only 1% dey 65 years or older.
Meanwhile, dem talk say overall net migration into UK almost reduce by half compared to di previous year. ONS estimate say net migration — di number of people wey enter minus di number wey comot — na about 431,000 for year wey end December 2024, compared to 860,000 di year before.
Dem say dis drop come because less non-EU+ people dey enter UK with work and school visa, and many of those wey come to study before, don comot go back as UK don relax COVID travel restrictions.
