The parish priest wey dey St. Anthony Catholic Church for Gulu inside Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, Rev. Father James Omeh, plus one woman wey dem identify as Charity John, don die as flood carry dem go.
Rev. Fr. Omeh na also the Coordinator of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for Lapai LGA.
This sad thing happen after serious rain fall for Sunday afternoon, May 25, 2026. The rain carry the white Hilux wey Father Omeh and Charity John dey use travel for Lapai-Gulu road near river.
One source talk say Father Omeh dey go Gulu around 12 noon when he reach one place near Duma village and see say the Lapai-Gulu bridge don collapse. As he try turn back go Duma, na there heavy rain come start, flood come rise quick quick and carry the Hilux motor comot road.
“Rev. Fr. Omeh, wey dey drive the white Hilux, flood carry am enter deep gutter wey full water. Na local people with help from Sarkin Ruwa later recover the motor. But sadly, dem find the dead bodies of Father Omeh and the woman for there,” the person talk.
People wey dey that area tell Daily Trust say the road condition for Lapai-Gulu bad wella and e don make many people dey worry. Dem dey beg make government do something quick to save people life wey dey use that road.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirm the matter on Monday.
He talk say dem don recover the dead bodies and hand dem over to the church people for burial.
“On 25th May, 2025 around 1 p.m., we receive report say Rev. Fr. James Omeh from St. Anthony Catholic Church, Gulu, and one woman called Charity John, dey go Gulu village inside white Toyota Hilux, na flood from heavy rain carry dem enter stream and dem drown,” SP Wasiu talk.
“Police from Lapai Division go the place sharp sharp. With the help of community people, dem recover the two bodies and give am to the church for burial. Dem also carry the motor comot from the stream,” he add.
