One 19-year-old university student, Funom Edison, don kpai because of power wahala for Rukuba Road area inside Jos North Local Government for Plateau State.
Plenty properties wey worth millions of naira burn and many people wound from electric shock.
Di power wahala happen around 11am for Sunday, May 25, 2025, but dem later control am small time after e start.
According to Punch, Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JEDC) no give light for some time. But as dem finally bring light back, na so kasala burst – plenty people don already suffer before because everything wey dem dey do stop.
As many people dey try recover wetin remain from their burnt house, one woman wey gree talk with Punch, Madam Joy Okpara Uba, talk say di thing pain dem well well.
She say, “Wetin happen to us for this community no good at all.” Madam Uba wey lose her big deep freezer and other electric things complain say:
“Yesterday, I no fit go work. If you enter my room now, everywhere don black because of the thick smoke wey full the place. I no sleep last night, I dey clean house since.
“One wake-keeping wey I suppose attend, I no fit go again. I still dey shock. But I thank God say I still dey alive.
“All my electric appliances burn. Na my neighbours help use anything dem fit find take quench the fire. If no be them, maybe the fire go don finish everything.”
Madam Ether Eche, wey be 38 years old, explain how she take escape electrocution:
“On Saturday, rain fall well well, we no get light. On Sunday, na around 11am JEDC bring light come back. Everybody happy say dem fit charge phone and do things.
“But before I plug my phone, all the electric things begin spark. I rush go off my extension but the control box don already catch fire. We run comot begin shout for help.
“Na that time we see say even electric poles and meters for other people house don catch fire too.
“We no know wetin to do but we no gree give up. We begin off light for everywhere make fire no spread go other people house. Luckily, we manage save some things.”
For 32-year-old Shade, the matter worse pass because her mama wey dey house dey rest at that time, almost kpai as electric surge jam her. Dem rush her go hospital almost lifeless.
She narrate:
“After church on Sunday, my mama dey house. As I wan enter, person shout say everywhere dey spark. People begin run, dey carry their children, dey try save their property.
“Na that time I hear say my mama still dey inside house. As I enter, I see her wey electric don hold for stabiliser. I shout, call for help. We manage pull her out. She no move. We rush go hospital. Na Bingham University Teaching Hospital she dey now, dey receive treatment.”
But the worst na from Madam Jonathan, wey lose her only pikin Edison – 19 years old, and university student.
Edison na leader for ECWA Teenage Church for Rukuba Road and ECWA Goodnews Centre. He participate for church service just two hours before he kpai.
Dem bury am on Thursday, May 29.
People talk say Edison just get admission enter Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University for Bauchi and for return school the Friday after e kpai.
Him mama, wey heart break, narrate:
“I no dey house when e start. My sister wey dey house call me say make I call electrician, say electric socket dey spark anyhow.
“I tell her say make she first off everything before electrician come. Later she tell me say fire no gree stop. I tell her make she come out with everybody.
“Next thing I hear na say dem shout say my pikin don fall and electricity don shock am. Even after dem off control switch, e still lie for ground like that.
“Before dem fit do anything, dem see say he no move again. Na so he kpai.”
Plateau State Government don show concern about the incident wey scatter the community.
The Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Peter Nyam Gai, talk say e follow government order go see wetin happen for Rukuba Road.
As e go visit people wey suffer from the thing, he talk say di damage na big one but government go try help make e no happen again.
He tell the people say government go do everything to support all the people wey this thing affect and make sure dem get justice.
