Nasarawa State Government don beg people wey dey live for flood-prone areas make dem quick quick comot go higher ground so that dem no go lose life when heavy rain start.
Margaret Elayo, wey be Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, talk this one on Saturday, May 31, for Lafia, as she dey yarn with journalists after she follow monitor the May edition of the monthly sanitation exercise.
Elayo say this warning come because of the latest prediction from Nigerian Meteorological Agency plus the way flood don cause wahala before—kill people and spoil plenty property. She talk say some states don already start to see flooding, so people wey dey vulnerable areas need to act fast.
She talk say, “We dey work with Local Government chairmen and traditional rulers to help direct the people wey this message concern, make dem know where to go stay safe. Make dem carry their important things and leave their houses for now, so that when flood come, nobody go die.”
She still beg people make dem stop to throw dirty inside gutter and make dem no build house for waterways. She talk say na this kind thing dey make flood worse. Elayo say dem go increase awareness campaign to teach people the importance of clearing drainages. Dem go work with traditional and religious leaders, community heads and the media to do this.
She also talk say government go make sure say the recycling plant for Akurba, Lafia, go start to work, so that people no go just dey throw dirty anyhow. She say the way dirty full street no make sense at all, and anybody wey no stop that kind behavior go face punishment.
As she dey talk say people no dey really show for the monthly environmental clean-up, Elayo beg residents to join body. “If we keep the environment clean, e go help prevent disease and make people live better life,” she talk. She still promise say the ministry go work hard to make Nasarawa one of the cleanest states for Nigeria.
For another tori, Abubakar Mohammed, wey be Chief Prosecutor Officer for the ministry, talk say dem arrest 168 people across the state wey no follow sanitation law. He talk say these people dey do business during sanitation hours, and that one no dey allowed under Section 9(2) of the State Environmental Sanitation Law.
