Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a 48-year-old man, identified as Lucky Alabi, and an alleged accomplice over a suspected self-kidnapping scheme aimed at collecting a ₦4 million ransom from his relatives.
According to the police, Alabi was reported missing by concerned family members after he allegedly disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Shortly afterward, his relatives reportedly began receiving calls from individuals demanding ₦4 million in exchange for his release, creating fears that he had been abducted.
The case was handed over to detectives, who launched an investigation using intelligence gathering and technical tracking methods. Police say their findings exposed inconsistencies in the kidnapping claim, eventually leading officers to Alabi’s location.
During the operation, the police arrested Alabi alongside an alleged accomplice. Preliminary investigations indicated that the pair allegedly conspired to stage the abduction in an attempt to fraudulently obtain money from the victim’s relatives.
Authorities said both suspects have confessed to their respective roles during interrogation and remain in police custody while investigations continue. They are expected to face prosecution after the conclusion of the investigation.
The Edo State Police Command used the incident to warn members of the public against fabricating kidnapping cases, stressing that such actions divert security resources away from genuine victims and constitute serious criminal offences under Nigerian law.
