The Lagos State Government has announced plans to demolish all illegal shanties and makeshift structures erected along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, giving occupants 72 hours to vacate the area before enforcement begins.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement after leading the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Surulere. He said the clearance operation will commence next week and will cover the stretch from Orile-Iganmu to Okokomaiko.
According to the governor, the highway median was never designed for residential, commercial, or market activities. He stressed that all illegal structures along the corridor would be removed without exception as part of efforts to restore order and protect public infrastructure.
Sanwo-Olu described the demolition as a necessary step to safeguard the significant public investment made on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and improve environmental sanitation across the state. He added that thousands of enforcement personnel would be deployed to ensure the exercise is carried out successfully.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening waste management in Lagos through the procurement of additional waste compactors and the development of modern recycling facilities. He urged residents to support sanitation efforts by disposing of waste properly and paying for waste collection services.
The planned demolition is part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing campaign to remove illegal structures, improve public safety, and maintain a cleaner urban environment.
