A 36-year-old Florida woman has been arrested and charged with child abuse after authorities said she was caught on surveillance video slapping her six-year-old son while making a grocery delivery.
The incident happened on May 31 at an apartment complex in St. Augustine, where the woman, identified as Kiah Lowery, was working as an independent delivery driver. According to investigators, she instructed her young son to carry a 24-pack of bottled water weighing about 26 pounds—more than half of the child’s 49-pound body weight.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the boy struggling to lift the heavy package before dropping it to the ground. As he cried and tried to move away, Lowery allegedly grabbed him and slapped him across the face while shouting insults and ordering him to continue carrying items. The customer who witnessed the incident through a security camera immediately reported it to law enforcement.
During questioning, Lowery reportedly admitted she became overwhelmed while completing multiple deliveries and described her actions as the result of an “overstimulated moment.” However, investigators concluded that the child was physically incapable of carrying the load and said punishing him for failing to do so amounted to abuse.
She was arrested on a child abuse charge, later released on a $5,000 bond, and ordered by the court to have no contact with her son while the case proceeds.
The delivery platform involved confirmed that Lowery was an independent contractor, not an employee. The company also stated that bringing children along during deliveries violates its policies and announced that her account has been permanently removed from the platform.
