Senator Adams Oshiomhole has thrown his support behind the proposed death penalty for convicted kidnappers and bandits in Edo State, describing the measure as necessary to combat the state’s growing security challenges.

The former Edo State governor made the remarks while speaking at the launch of the APC campaign for the Edo North Senatorial District local government elections in Auchi. He backed the position of Governor Monday Okpebholo, who has proposed stricter penalties for kidnapping and banditry.

Oshiomhole argued that states have the constitutional authority to enact laws addressing crimes committed within their jurisdictions. According to him, individuals found guilty of kidnapping and banditry should face death by firing squad if the proposed law is enacted. He also stated that law-abiding residents have nothing to fear from the government’s security measures, insisting that only criminals would be affected.

The senator also renewed his support for the establishment of state police, saying decentralized policing would strengthen efforts to tackle insecurity and complement the work of the Nigeria Police Force.

Governor Okpebholo, who also addressed party supporters, highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects across Edo State, including roads, schools and markets. He maintained that his administration remains committed to improving security and the welfare of residents while urging party members to mobilize support ahead of the local government elections.
