A 74-year-old resident has been killed after suspected armed bandits launched a midnight attack on Jebbu Miango community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State. The attackers were repelled by troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), preventing what security officials say could have been a more devastating assault.
According to security sources, the attack occurred at about 12:10 a.m. on Sunday when armed men opened fire in the community. Troops attached to Sector 3 of Operation Enduring Peace responded swiftly to distress calls, engaged the attackers in a gun battle, and forced them to flee into nearby highlands.
After securing the area, soldiers conducted a search and discovered the body of a 74-year-old resident, identified as Baba Den, who is believed to have been killed during the attack. No further civilian casualties were immediately reported.
The military has since intensified patrols and launched follow-up operations across the surrounding communities to prevent the attackers from regrouping or carrying out additional assaults. Authorities said the security situation has been brought under control, while efforts continue to track down the fleeing gunmen.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace in the area.
