Ferland Mendy, the Real Madrid left-back, has been ordered to stand trial in Spain over an incident in which one of his dogs allegedly attacked a 17-year-old boy and two other dogs after escaping from his property.
The case stems from an incident that occurred in January 2023 in Alcobendas, near Madrid. According to court documents, four dogs owned by Mendy reportedly got out of his residence after an unsecured gate allowed them to escape.
During the incident, one of the dogs allegedly bit a 17-year-old on the leg while attacking two other dogs. One of the injured dogs suffered severe injuries and was later euthanized, while the second dog required veterinary treatment.
Spanish prosecutors have charged Mendy with a minor assault offence and are seeking a fine of €1,200. However, lawyers representing the injured teenager are pursuing a more severe penalty, requesting a six-month prison sentence for alleged gross negligence, along with €20,000 in compensation for the teenager and additional damages for the owner of the injured dog.
Investigators also allege that the dogs did not have the required microchips, liability insurance, or up-to-date rabies vaccinations. The court has ordered Mendy to deposit €7,410 as financial security to cover any potential civil liabilities if he is found responsible.
The trial will be heard by Madrid’s Criminal Court No. 26, although a hearing date has not yet been announced. At this stage, Mendy has not been convicted, and the court proceedings will determine whether he bears criminal responsibility for the incident.
The 31-year-old French international joined Real Madrid from Lyon in 2019 and has won multiple major trophies with the Spanish giants, including several league titles and UEFA Champions League crowns.
