Flesh-Eating Bacteria Raises Health Concerns on European Beaches Amid Rising Sea Temperatures

Health authorities across Europe are warning holidaymakers to take extra precautions as cases linked to Vibrio vulnificus—a potentially dangerous bacterium often referred to as “flesh-eating bacteria”—become a growing concern along some of the continent’s coastlines.

The bacterium naturally thrives in warm, brackish coastal waters and is being detected more frequently as sea temperatures continue to rise during Europe’s intense summer heatwaves. Experts say climate change is creating more favourable conditions for the bacteria to multiply, particularly in shallow coastal waters.

Although most Vibrio bacteria are harmless, Vibrio vulnificus can cause severe infections if it enters the body through an open wound. In rare but serious cases, the infection may lead to tissue destruction, bloodstream infections, or a life-threatening condition known as necrotising fasciitis. People with weakened immune systems, chronic liver disease, or existing health conditions face the greatest risk.

Several beaches in parts of Spain have reportedly faced temporary closures or health advisories following concerns about the bacteria, prompting public health agencies to issue safety recommendations for swimmers and tourists.

Medical experts advise beachgoers to avoid entering seawater if they have cuts, wounds, or recent surgical incisions. Visitors are also encouraged to avoid eating raw or undercooked shellfish, especially oysters, which can sometimes carry harmful strains of Vibrio.

Despite the warnings, health officials stress that serious infections remain uncommon. Most people can safely enjoy the beach by following basic hygiene and safety precautions. Authorities continue to monitor coastal waters while encouraging tourists to stay informed about local health advisories.

Health officials warn that warming seas are increasing the spread of Vibrio bacteria along some European beaches. Learn the symptoms, risks, and safety tips for travellers.
