A fresh wave of violent attacks has heightened fears in Delta State, where suspected kidnappers reportedly killed a man after collecting ransom from his family, while in a separate incident, gunmen murdered a farmer and abducted his wife and child.
The incidents have intensified concerns over rising insecurity in parts of the state, particularly in communities within Ethiope West Local Government Area.
Victim Killed Despite Ransom Payment
According to the Oghara Study Group (OSG), a community-based advocacy organisation, one of the latest victims was abducted alongside his wife. Although ransom was paid to secure their release, the kidnappers allegedly killed the man, while his wife managed to escape from captivity.
The group described the incident as part of a disturbing trend in which victims are murdered even after their families meet ransom demands, leaving relatives devastated both emotionally and financially.
Farmer Killed, Wife and Child Taken Away
In another attack, suspected armed men ambushed a farming family in Oghara while they were working on their farmland.
The attackers reportedly shot and killed the farmer, identified as Vincent Adojor, before abducting his wife and child. The incident occurred on June 29, 2026, and residents say no information has yet emerged about the whereabouts of the abducted family members.
Community Raises Alarm Over Rising Insecurity
The Oghara Study Group said insecurity has reached an alarming level, with frequent cases of kidnapping, killings, armed attacks and violence affecting residents, commuters and farmers.
According to the group, fear has disrupted farming, business activities, education and daily life, while many families have been left traumatised by repeated attacks. It also warned that persistent insecurity threatens investment and economic activities in the area.
Calls for Stronger Security Measures
Community leaders have appealed to the Federal Government, the Delta State Government, and security agencies to deploy more personnel and strengthen surveillance across affected communities.
They also called for improved collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups, as well as thorough investigations into the recent attacks to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
