Serena Williams has withdrawn from her highly anticipated women’s doubles match at 2026 Wimbledon Championships, ending hopes of a long-awaited reunion on court with her sister, Venus Williams.
The 44-year-old tennis legend pulled out of the tournament after failing to recover from a right knee injury she sustained during her singles comeback earlier in the week. Despite receiving intensive treatment, including having fluid drained from her knee, Serena said she was not physically fit enough to compete.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Serena described the decision as heartbreaking.
“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles. Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”
Tournament organisers had delayed scheduling the sisters’ first-round doubles match to give Serena extra time to recover, but the injury ultimately ruled her out. The Williams sisters were due to face Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra before being replaced in the draw by Samantha Murray Sharan and Lanlana Tararudee.
The withdrawal is a disappointing setback for fans, as it would have marked Serena and Venus’ first doubles appearance together since the 2022 US Open and their first Wimbledon doubles campaign in a decade. Together, the sisters have won six Wimbledon women’s doubles titles and remain one of the most successful partnerships in tennis history.
Although her Wimbledon campaign has come to an early end, Serena hinted that her return to competitive tennis may not be over, suggesting that fans could see her back on court later this season.
