The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with the tragic killing of two travellers who were falsely accused of being thieves in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The victims, identified as Muhammadu Sani (45) and Aliyu Mohammed (40), were reportedly travelling on a motorcycle to Tudun Wada in Zaria to visit a sick relative when they passed through Gidan Kalu Village.
According to police findings, some residents became suspicious after seeing the men riding a new motorcycle and began shouting that they were thieves. Alarmed by the accusations, the victims abandoned the motorcycle and attempted to escape.
Despite repeatedly insisting they were innocent, they were chased by an angry mob and beaten to death. Reports indicate that some members of the crowd even recognized the victims but failed to stop the attack.
Police Arrest Six Suspects
Following the incident, officers from the Birnin Yero Police Division launched an investigation that led to the arrest of six suspects, including one identified as Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo.
Police authorities disclosed that some of the arrested suspects have admitted to taking part in the attack, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the killing.
Commissioner Condemns Jungle Justice
Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, described the incident as unlawful and unacceptable, stressing that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.
He assured residents that everyone connected to the crime would face prosecution regardless of their status and urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to security agencies instead of resorting to mob action.
Growing Concern Over Mob Violence
The incident has renewed concerns about the increasing cases of jungle justice in Kaduna State.
It comes only weeks after another resident was reportedly killed following false allegations, raising questions about public awareness, due process, and the dangers of taking the law into private hands.
Security experts continue to warn that false accusations and mob violence often result in the deaths of innocent people while undermining Nigeria’s justice system.
