Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has dismissed suggestions that former Anambra State governor Peter Obi poses a political threat to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an interview with ARISE News, Umahi said neither he nor the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is worried about Obi’s political influence. He described the excitement surrounding the former presidential candidate as “AI politics,” arguing that it is exaggerated and does not reflect reality.
Umahi declared that Obi “cannot even face me, let alone face the President,” insisting that President Tinubu remains politically stronger than any opposition figure ahead of the next general election. He maintained that the APC has no reason to fear Obi’s growing popularity.
The minister also criticised Obi’s record as governor of Anambra State, alleging that he failed to deliver key infrastructure projects, establish industries, empower residents, and complete major development initiatives during his administration. According to Umahi, these issues weaken Obi’s criticisms of the current federal government.
Reacting to Obi’s recent comments calling on President Tinubu to resign over Nigeria’s security challenges, Umahi questioned whether Obi had ever considered resigning while serving as governor when his administration faced its own governance challenges. He argued that leadership should be judged by long-term achievements rather than political statements.
Umahi further challenged Obi and members of the Obidient movement to a public debate on governance and infrastructure, expressing confidence that the Tinubu administration’s reforms and ongoing projects would compare favourably with previous administrations.
The remarks have added to the growing political exchanges between members of the ruling APC and opposition figures as discussions around the 2027 presidential election continue to gather momentum.
