The Federal Road Safety Corps (Federal Road Safety Corps) has issued a strong warning against the dangerous practice of vehicle overloading after intercepting multiple heavily loaded vehicles across different parts of the country.
According to the agency, overloading remains one of the major causes of fatal road accidents in Nigeria, as it puts unnecessary pressure on vehicles and increases the risk of brake failure, tire bursts, and loss of control while driving.
In a strongly worded message shared after the interception, FRSC described the situation as “an audition for disaster,” stressing that many of the vehicles were so overloaded that they posed an immediate danger to both passengers and other road users.
The agency questioned the judgment of drivers and loaders, asking how such extreme levels of cargo could be considered safe for transportation. Officials warned that what some people see as a cost-saving measure is actually a “rolling road hazard waiting to happen.”
FRSC further emphasized that no delivery or profit is worth the loss of human life, urging transport operators and drivers to prioritize safety over financial gain.
Road safety officials also called for stricter compliance with traffic regulations, noting that enforcement operations will continue nationwide to reduce crashes linked to overloading and other reckless driving behaviors.
Over the years, the FRSC has consistently warned that overloading, combined with speeding and poor vehicle maintenance, remains a deadly combination on Nigerian roads.
