ISWAP Fighter’s Wife Surrenders to Nigerian Troops with Two-Month-Old Baby in Borno

A woman identified as the wife of a suspected fighter belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has surrendered to troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Borno State, bringing along her two-month-old baby after reportedly escaping from a terrorist enclave.

According to security sources, the woman, identified as Falmata Bakwai, surrendered to soldiers of the 19 Brigade stationed at Cross Kauwa in Kukawa Local Government Area on June 26.

During preliminary questioning, she reportedly told military personnel that she fled from the ISWAP camp at Dogon Chuku while her husband and other fighters were away. She explained that worsening living conditions inside the enclave, particularly severe food shortages and the lack of essential supplies, forced her to escape.

Security officials believe the hardship experienced in the camp is linked to sustained military offensives, including coordinated ground operations and airstrikes targeting terrorist hideouts across Nigeria’s North-East.

Following her surrender, Bakwai and her infant were placed in quarantine and are receiving medical attention in line with military procedures. Authorities have also begun a detailed debriefing process, after which she is expected to be transferred to the headquarters of Sector 3 of Operation Hadin Kai and the Multinational Joint Task Force for further profiling and investigation.

Security analysts say the latest surrender reflects the increasing pressure on insurgent groups as Nigerian troops continue sustained operations against terrorist strongholds in the region.
