The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, has called on Nigerian families to reduce excessive spending on weddings, particularly on aso-ebi, expensive bridal makeup, and lavish celebrations, urging them to channel such resources toward helping the less privileged.
Speaking during the 20th anniversary of the Crystal Muslim Organisation (CMO) in Abuja, the traditional ruler expressed concern over the growing culture of extravagant wedding spending despite the country’s economic challenges.
The Emir criticized the trend of families spending millions of naira on wedding cosmetics and luxury aso-ebi, noting that some parents reportedly spend up to $10,000 on bridal makeup, while others purchase aso-ebi fabrics worth hundreds of thousands of naira. He described such spending as unnecessary, especially at a time when many Nigerians struggle to afford basic necessities.
He encouraged parents to guide their children toward investments that promote self-reliance, skill acquisition, and community development instead of extravagant ceremonies. According to him, scaling back unnecessary wedding expenses would allow families to better support vulnerable members of society and strengthen their communities.
Drawing from his experience as Nigeria’s former envoy to Thailand, Bamalli praised the country’s modest wedding culture and emphasis on vocational skills. He said many Thai families prioritize financial stability and practical skills over expensive celebrations, a model he believes Nigerians can learn from.
The Emir stressed that while celebrations are important, moderation is necessary, especially given Nigeria’s current economic realities.
