Troops Repel Terrorist Attack on Borno Military Base as Soldier and CJTF Member Lose Their Lives

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on a military base in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State, preventing insurgents from overrunning the facility despite a fierce overnight battle.

According to military authorities, suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched the attack on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Mairari at about 11:25 p.m. on July 1. Troops mounted a determined counteroffensive, forcing the attackers to retreat after inflicting heavy casualties on the insurgents and recovering weapons left behind.

The military, however, confirmed that two soldiers and one member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) paid the supreme sacrifice while defending the base. Some military equipment was also damaged after being struck by rocket-propelled grenades during the exchange of fire.

Operation HADIN KAI praised the courage and resilience of the fallen personnel, describing them as heroes who gave their lives in the defence of the nation. The command also extended condolences to their families and assured Nigerians that operations against insurgents across the North-East will continue.

Security forces say clearance operations are ongoing in the area to track down fleeing terrorists and prevent further attacks on military formations.
