The Lagos State Government has appealed to residents and critics to avoid turning the issue of flooding into a political debate, insisting that the state has made significant progress in flood prevention and drainage management despite the growing effects of climate change.
Speaking during an inspection of major drainage channels and flood-prone communities, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources said the government has invested heavily in infrastructure and environmental reforms over the past three years to reduce flooding across the state. He maintained that many of the recent incidents were temporary flash floods caused by intense rainfall rather than widespread flooding.
According to the commissioner, the government has implemented several long-term measures, including expanding drainage networks, clearing blocked waterways, removing illegal structures from floodplains, protecting wetlands, and introducing environmental policies such as restrictions on Styrofoam and certain plastic products. He argued that these initiatives have significantly improved the state’s ability to cope with heavy rainfall.
He also criticized those using the seasonal flooding to attack the government’s performance, saying emergency response teams have been working around the clock to keep drainage systems functional. The commissioner noted that some of the flood-control measures already implemented in Lagos are similar to strategies other African cities are only beginning to adopt.
While acknowledging that heavy rains will continue to pose challenges, the government emphasized that flash flooding often subsides within a few hours once drainage channels begin to discharge excess water. Officials urged residents to support environmental sanitation efforts by avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal and complying with flood prevention regulations.
