The controversy surrounding the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) has taken a new turn after the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) stated that the council does not have an operational account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), a position that differs from an earlier claim made by the Presidency.
According to the OAGF, while an application was initiated to open a CBN account for the PFIPC, the process was never completed because the required documentation and authorised signatories were not submitted. As a result, the account was never activated or made operational.
The clarification comes days after the Presidency alleged that the self-acclaimed Director-General of the PFIPC, Adeniyi Adeyemi, fraudulently used forged documents to mislead government officials into opening a CBN account for the council.
Responding to the issue, OAGF spokesperson Bawa Mokwa explained that although the account opening request reached the office, the process stopped before completion because mandatory requirements were not fulfilled. He maintained that no operational account exists in the name of the PFIPC at the apex bank.
The conflicting statements have further fueled public interest in the PFIPC controversy, especially after reports that the council appeared in the 2026 federal budget despite the Presidency insisting it is not a legally recognised government agency. The matter has also raised broader questions about oversight and internal verification processes within government institutions.
Authorities have stated that investigations into the activities of the disputed council are ongoing, while criminal charges relating to alleged forgery, impersonation and fraud remain before the court.
