Peter Obi Alleges Tinubu Has Yet to Contact Makinde Over Oyo School Kidnapping

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has claimed that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde told him he has not received a single phone call from President Bola Tinubu since the abduction of 37 pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of the state more than 50 days ago.

Obi made the statement after visiting Governor Makinde in Ibadan alongside political economist, Professor Pat Utomi. According to him, he had expected that the President and the governor had been in regular communication over efforts to secure the safe return of the victims.

He said he was surprised when Makinde informed him that no such communication had taken place since the tragic incident, describing the situation as a reflection of what he believes is a decline in compassionate leadership and effective governance.

Obi recalled his own experience as governor of Anambra State, noting that former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan regularly contacted state governors whenever serious security challenges arose. He argued that such direct communication demonstrated concern for the welfare of citizens and encouraged coordinated responses during emergencies.

The former governor also referenced the national reaction to the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction, saying many political leaders—including Tinubu at the time—criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the crisis and demanded stronger leadership. He questioned why similar concern has not been shown following several school kidnapping incidents under the current administration.

Obi stressed that the safety of schoolchildren and other kidnapped Nigerians should remain a top national priority, urging the Federal Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of those still in captivity and strengthen measures to prevent future attacks.
