A tragic fire incident in Benue State has left two young children dead, with police arresting a woman accused of setting the victims’ father’s house ablaze during what witnesses claim was a dispute over alleged infidelity.
According to the Benue State Police Command, the incident occurred in Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area, where the suspect, identified as Mbalumen Ikyenge, was taken into custody following the fatal fire. The victims, aged four and six, reportedly suffered severe burns and later died despite efforts to save them.
Police spokesperson Udeme Edet confirmed that authorities received a report from the children’s father, who alleged that someone deliberately set his house on fire. While eyewitnesses suggested the incident may have been triggered by a lovers’ quarrel after the suspect allegedly believed another woman was with her boyfriend, the police emphasized that investigations are still ongoing and that the motive has not been officially established.
Residents claimed the suspect visited her boyfriend’s residence on the night of the incident but was asked to leave. She allegedly remained nearby before the fire broke out around midnight.
