China Hands Death Sentence to Ex-Government Official Over Massive Bribery Case
A Chinese court has sentenced former government official Yang Youlin to death after finding him guilty of accepting bribes worth about $325 million over a period of three decades.
The case has become one of the biggest corruption scandals involving a Chinese public official in recent years, with authorities accusing Yang of abusing his government positions to obtain illegal financial benefits.
Yang, who previously worked in the economic development sector in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, was convicted by the Changzhou Intermediate People’s Court. The court ruled that he illegally received more than 2.21 billion yuan (approximately $325 million) between 1993 and 2023.

Court Orders Confiscation of Assets
The court ordered that Yang’s personal property be confiscated and authorities will continue efforts to recover the money and assets linked to his illegal activities.
During his final statement in court, Yang reportedly expressed guilt and remorse over his actions.
The verdict also included the removal of his political rights for life, highlighting the severity of the crimes for which he was convicted.
