CJN Warns New Judges Against Accepting Unsolicited Gifts, Avoiding Unnecessary Birthday Parties

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has advised newly appointed judges of the lower courts to uphold strict ethical standards by rejecting unsolicited gifts and avoiding extravagant personal celebrations that could compromise public confidence in the judiciary.

The CJN gave the warning during the opening of an induction course organised for new judges. Represented by the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Justice Babatunde Adejumo, she urged the judges to ensure fairness and speed in handling cases, noting that efficient justice delivery is important to maintaining citizens’ trust in the legal system.

Justice Kekere-Ekun cautioned that accepting gifts from individuals, especially unsolicited ones, could expose judges to allegations of misconduct and petitions. She also advised them against holding unnecessary birthday parties where people might use the occasion as an opportunity to present gifts that could raise ethical concerns.

She further encouraged the new judges to maintain good working relationships with court officials, including registrars and exhibit keepers, while also studying court procedures carefully to avoid being misled by lawyers. She warned that judicial powers, such as the power of contempt, should be exercised carefully and only when necessary.

The NJI Administrator congratulated the newly appointed judges and reminded them of the responsibility attached to their positions. He said lower court judges play a crucial role in providing grassroots justice and reducing pressure on higher courts.
