EFCC Hands Over 1,452 Recovered Items to Strengthen Unity Schools

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has handed over 1,452 recovered hostel items to the Federal Ministry of Education for distribution to Unity Schools across Nigeria, in a move aimed at improving student welfare and ensuring that assets recovered from crime are put to public use.

The items include 501 double-step bunk beds, 939 mattresses, and 12 wooden beds with mattresses. They were officially presented by EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during a ceremony in Abuja.

According to Olukoyede, the recovered items were seized during Operation Eagle Flush, a nationwide anti-cybercrime operation launched in late 2024. The operation resulted in the arrest of 792 suspects, including 193 foreign nationals, who were prosecuted before the foreign nationals were deported after serving their sentences.

The EFCC chairman explained that the Federal Government decided to redirect recovered assets to projects that directly benefit Nigerians, especially young people. He noted that corruption and financial crimes often deprive students of opportunities, making education a priority beneficiary of recovered assets. He also reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to transparency in managing forfeited proceeds of crime.

The education minister praised the EFCC’s efforts, describing education as a key pillar of Nigeria’s long-term economic development. He revealed that the initial ₦50 billion seed funding for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund also came from recovered proceeds of crime. Alausa added that the newly recovered hostel facilities would be deployed to Unity Schools to improve accommodation for students nationwide.
