A 70-year-old foster mother in Missouri, United States, has been accused of trading her foster daughter for a pet monkey after allegedly subjecting the child to years of physical, emotional, and mental abuse.
According to court documents and reports from U.S. authorities, the woman, identified as Brenda Deutsch, was arrested and charged with child abuse, neglect, and child endangerment. Investigators are also looking into allegations that she may have exchanged the teenage girl with a family in Texas in return for a monkey.
Allegations of Years of Abuse
Authorities said the case came to light after an anonymous report was made to child welfare officials. During interviews with investigators, the girl allegedly described years of mistreatment, claiming she was physically assaulted, threatened, and subjected to various forms of punishment while living under Deutsch’s care.
Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wood described the situation as a “culture of abuse and neglect,” alleging that the child experienced emotional abuse, physical abuse, and neglect over an extended period.
Alleged Exchange for a Monkey
The investigation intensified after school officials reported that the child had been absent from school and was believed to be living in Texas. Authorities later located the teenager and discovered she had been staying with a family connected to Deutsch. Witnesses reportedly told investigators that the arrangement may have involved the exchange of the child for a monkey, although authorities are still working to determine the exact nature of the transaction.
Prosecutors stated that multiple witnesses have provided information suggesting that a monkey was transported back to Missouri after the child was sent to Texas. Investigators are examining whether the circumstances could amount to human trafficking or other serious offenses.
Child Found in Texas
Officials said the teenager was eventually found in Texas living under poor conditions. Reports indicate that she was not receiving proper supervision and was left to care for adults in the household. Child protection authorities later removed her from the residence and placed her in protective custody.
Wider Investigation Underway
Authorities revealed that Deutsch had fostered or adopted approximately 200 children over the years. Prosecutors say they are reviewing numerous complaints and allegations involving other children who may have been abused while in her care. More charges could follow as the investigation continues.
Law enforcement officials have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward as they continue gathering evidence in the case. Deutsch remains in custody while legal proceedings move forward.
