A search operation in Plateau State has ended in tragedy after the body of a man who had earlier been reported missing was discovered at a mining site in Jos South Local Government Area.
According to security sources, troops of Sector 3, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) received a report at about 7:30 a.m. on June 29 that a man identified simply as Jerry had gone missing from the Rantya area.
The troops, working alongside members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation across nearby bushes and surrounding areas.
During the search, the team discovered Jerry’s body at a mining site. Preliminary examination revealed that he had sustained gunshot wounds as well as multiple machete cuts, indicating he was violently attacked before his death.
Initial investigations suggest the deceased had left home to engage in illegal mining activities but failed to return, prompting relatives to report him missing.
Security agencies have commenced investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible. No arrests have been announced as of the time of reporting.
