Authorities in Liberia have arrested a Nigerian man and his wife over allegations that they trafficked 11 Liberian children to The Gambia for exploitation and child labour.
According to reports, the suspects were taken into custody following an investigation into the movement of several minors from Liberia across international borders under suspicious circumstances. Preliminary findings suggest that the children were allegedly transported to The Gambia and forced into various forms of labour.
Law enforcement agencies revealed that the children, whose ages range between childhood and early adolescence, were reportedly taken from different communities in Liberia with promises of better opportunities and living conditions.
Investigators believe the children were instead subjected to exploitative conditions after arriving in The Gambia. The authorities have since launched efforts to determine the full extent of the operation and identify any additional individuals connected to the alleged trafficking network.
The rescued children are currently receiving care and support from relevant child protection agencies while investigations continue.
Officials from both Liberia and The Gambia are reportedly working together to gather evidence and ensure those responsible are brought to justice. The case has also reignited concerns about child trafficking and forced labour across parts of West Africa, where vulnerable children are often targeted by criminal networks. Human trafficking remains a significant challenge in the region, with children frequently being exploited for labour and other illegal activities.
