Seven suspected commanders linked to Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have been arrested by Nigerian security operatives after arriving at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
The development was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who revealed that the suspects were identified through Nigeria’s newly integrated digital identity and border security system before they were taken into custody.
According to the minister, the successful operation was made possible through the collaboration between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and international security agencies, including Interpol. The improved intelligence-sharing system reportedly enabled authorities to flag the suspects immediately they landed in the country.
Following their arrest, the seven suspects were transferred to the Department of State Services (DSS) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The minister described the arrests as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, saying the country’s strengthened identity management infrastructure is already producing positive results in national security.
He also noted that the recent signing of the NIMC Act 2026 is expected to further improve identity verification, intelligence gathering, and cooperation among security agencies in tackling terrorism and other forms of criminal activities.
Security authorities have not released the identities of the suspects, while investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their alleged involvement in terrorist operations.
The latest arrests highlight the increasing role of technology and digital identity systems in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and preventing suspected criminals from moving freely across borders.
