France’s first confirmed Ebola patient has fully recovered and has been discharged from hospital, marking a positive milestone in the country’s response to the deadly viral disease.
The patient, a doctor, tested positive for Ebola after arriving in France from the Democratic Republic of the Congo on June 23, where the country is currently battling a major Ebola outbreak. French health authorities immediately isolated the physician and admitted them to a specialist infectious disease facility for treatment.
French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist announced that the doctor had made a full recovery and was discharged from the medical facility to continue recuperating at home. She described the outcome as encouraging and praised the healthcare teams involved in the patient’s treatment.
This was the first Ebola case ever detected on French soil. Although France treated two Ebola patients during the 2014 West African outbreak, those individuals had already been diagnosed before being transported to the country for medical care.
Officials said the doctor experienced only mild symptoms, mainly headaches, and remained almost asymptomatic throughout the illness. As a precaution, five passengers who travelled on the same flight were identified as close contacts and placed under isolation and monitoring.
Meanwhile, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to pose a serious public health challenge. According to the latest official figures, more than 1,400 confirmed infections and over 430 deaths have been recorded since the outbreak was declared in May 2026. Health authorities and international partners are continuing efforts to contain the spread of the virus.
