The worshippers abducted during an attack on a church gathering in Ekiti State have finally regained their freedom after spending more than two months in captivity. Sadly, one of the victims died before the rescue operation was completed, bringing a heartbreaking end to the prolonged ordeal.
The victims were kidnapped on April 28, 2026, when armed attackers stormed a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) worship programme in Eda Oniyo, Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State. During the attack, the church’s officiating pastor was killed, while several worshippers, including women and children, were taken into the forest by the gunmen.
According to the Ekiti State Police Command, the remaining abductees were successfully rescued through coordinated intelligence-led operations involving the police, the military, local security outfits, hunters, and other stakeholders. Authorities said the victims have been taken to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) for medical evaluation and treatment after enduring weeks of physical abuse, hunger, and harsh conditions in captivity.
The Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government confirmed that although the community is grateful for the victims’ return, one female captive lost her life while still being held by the kidnappers. He described the development as both a moment of relief and deep sorrow for the affected families and the entire community.
Reports indicate that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion, which was later reduced to ₦50 million. Community members reportedly raised millions of naira along with other requested supplies, yet the captives remained in the kidnappers’ custody for several weeks before security forces secured their release.
The Commissioner of Police commended the collaboration among security agencies and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest those responsible for the attack. He also urged members of the public to continue providing useful information that could help strengthen security across the state.
